I draw a lot. It gives me great satisfaction to engage the tiny details; I am a perfectionist. What was patience in my craft is now simply an acceptance to go to any length to appease my aesthetic. There are no mistakes. Creating a line is a balance between intention and recognizing the possibilities in the moment; this is ever emphasized when using natural mediums such as flower petals, water soluble inks, and the insect: Cochineal.
I like functional Art.
...And so I began making candles displaying my drawings on the exterior of the glass to be illuminated. The endeavor was a catalyst for sewing.
It is my firm belief that all of life's questions can be answered with a sewing machine. With the notion of putting Art on shirts: Rather than silk-screening, using paints, or dye - to me it made sense to embroider; that it would be very real to have a design interwoven with the fabric. These images will not fade or peel away. I borrowed a sewing machine to see if the idea would even work; to essentially draw with a sewing machine.

It was the doubtful notion of making 'patches' that opened a world of ideas.
An odd family of characters emerged- like these Abstract fish animal people who make-up FishTown:
there's Mister Trout Pants, Octalottalipapus, Sea Moe, Fish Head, Squid Nose, Fish Mits, the Elephish, and many more Sewing Designs.
A sewing machine is a relatively complex machine to operate. I use it non-traditionally and have worn-out several machines since 2004. People have responded so enthusiastically to my sewing. I believe one reason is that when trying to draw with a sewing machine it's nearly impossible to come-across as a perfectionist. I think people like the raw rough edges; perhaps to remind us that being human is a wandering path.
The next step was to bring the sewing machine for people to see. I built the Solar Sewing Rover - a portable sewing machine table powered by a solar panel or a bicycle electric generator. With the ability to sew designs at any time and any location, I began asking people to give me scenarios, using five-words-or-less. It has become my mission to help people use their creativity, provide a tangible patch of their ideas, and teach how to build alternative energy sources.
Currently I am focusing on a return to my original Art form; much like how I draw, but using the sewing machine.

your skill on the sewing machine is mad,I've used all kinds of machines from featherweight to various industrial macines, I have 15 machines and have been sewing for numerous decades,if it can be sewn, I will or have sewn it, I too have "drawn" many things and my "quilting" stitching is very artistic (free-motion also)but you, you ROCK MAN!As well I'd like to share with you that I am and have always been a cyclist, my son who grew up on the back of my bike is now a "bike guru", I have been asking friends etc. to help me work out how to power my machine by riding a bike since the early "90's and everyone laughed at me, you are very smart and very COOL! My son, now 28 also watched one of your videos and isn't laughing at me now.All the best to you, maybe one day you'll come and show off your skills in Canada, B.C. is reeeally chill.

Just graduated from college...and want to be able to go out and do some work in other countries and help out in whatever way I can. I loved your piece on "solar sewing machines"! Your music is great, your contribution with your art form thru sewing is amazing, and I would like to know if there is a way that I can get some ideas from you to perhaps seek some funding (grant writing/proposals) to facilitate/replicate/duplicate the portion of your idea with a solar powered sewing machine to better small rural communities. Maybe it would be a means of survival and bring an income for families without any other source of income. Thanks for any response you can give!
