I draw a lot. Drawing is a function of my life. It gives me great satisfaction to engage the tiny details; I am a perfectionist. What was patience in my craft is now simply an acceptance to go to any length to appease my aesthetic. There are no mistakes. Creating a line is a balance between intention and recognizing the possibilities in the moment; this is ever emphasized when using natural mediums such as flower petals, water soluble inks, and the insect: Cochineal.
I want to give the Art Lover more than good Art.
I want Function in Art.
...And so I began making candles: Basic 7inch glass candles with my drawings wrapped around the outside. The endeavor was a catalyst for sewing.
It has become my firm belief that all of life's questions can be answered with a sewing machine. With the notion of putting Art on shirts, I saw past silk-screening, using paints, or dyes. It made sense to me: that it would be very real to put a design on a shirt by means of embroidery; having the Art interwoven with the fabric. These images will not fade or peel away. I borrowed a sewing machine to see if the idea would even work; to essentially draw with a sewing machine.
Admittingly the first few pieces were rough. Slowly, with many trials, drawings, and discussions (with painter/friend Gavin Troy, illustrator/painter Titus Castanza, and singer/songwriter Leila Lopez) the ideas began to develop.
It was finally the doubtful notion of making "patches" that opened a world of ideas.
An odd family of characters emerged- like these Abstract fish animal people who make-up FishTown:
there's Mister Trout Pants, Octalottalipapus, Sea Moe, Fish Head, Squid Nose, Fish Mits, the Elephish, and many more Sewing Designs
A sewing machine is a relatively complex machine to operate. I use it non-traditionally and have worn-out two machines since starting in 2003. So many enthusiasts have responded to my sewing. I believe one reason is that when trying to draw with a sewing machine it's nearly impossible to come-across as a perfectionist. I think people like the raw rough edges; perhaps to remind us that being human is a wandering path.

Artist Statement:
What can I sew for you?
Think of a scenario; anything.
I will interpret what you describe.
If you can say it in five words or less,
I can sew it, and I'll email a picture to you.
I'm trying to have you look at your imagination, and provide you a tangible piece of it.
After seeing my interpretation, if you would like the embroidered image, you can give me whatever you think it's worth and I will send it to you in the mail.

WOW. I am truly fascinated with your patches. Being a seamstress myself, I can really appreciate the interpretation without templates. THAT, my friend, is pure talent! Will be looking for you at future First Fridays so that I can make my purchases!!
